Alien ate your Website!

Explaining Divers, Searchers & Navigators
There are 3 distinct types of audience visiting your website, and you alienate any one of them at your peril...

They say Men are from Mars & Women are from Venus to explain how different people perceive the world in wildly different ways. It's the same with websites. People are worlds apart on how they interact with your website and will instantly like or reject it based on their particular “information prejudice”.

All too often the website designer has their own prejudice and alienates two-thirds of the audience:

Navigators instantly look for the navigation menu - if it is clear, logical and functional, you’ve gone a long way to them perceiving your website as a winner.
Searchers, look for the search box, usually towards the top right of each page.
Divers are the impulsive people who ignore navigation menus and search, and plunge headfirst into the first link on the website that attracts their eye.

Remember, each of these categories of people instinctively believe their way is the only “right” way and their prejudice dictates a good from a bad website. The beauty of good website design is that you can cater for everyone and alienate no one.

Re-use, recycle, re-purpose... Your CONTENT!

A lot of background development at Eye Media Australia has been focused on creating innovative, multiple uses for the same data and content. Current work has been focused on re-using data and content for interactive online mapping, content syndication, mobile and SMS services and re-broadcasting to giant video screens –as well as the more typical Internet/Intranet/Extranet.

Here’s some recent examples of Eye Media developments and demonstrations to get your creative juices flowing:

- intelligent systems to filter and display priority data dynamically on large format screens for call centre staff
- a system that allows users to draw a Google map of their area of interest, that then extracts data and sends SMS, Web and email alerts based on each individual’s location and information preferences
- a generic system that calculates a person’s Carbon Footprint based on their employment, location and other factors
- a system that alerts sales people with contact information of a person who shows a particular level of interest in their product or service on a website
- a system that gathers data from multiple websites and re-purposes it into SMS alerts or email reports based on their registered location, interest, buying habits and other preferences

Like so much of our work, the technical limitations have been largely overcome - and the possibilities really are "limited only by your imagination" - let’s hear your ideas!

Showcase Site - ESTA 000

Just launched, is the Emergency Services Telecommunications Authority website at www.esta.vic.gov.au - powered by the latest version of the WebInterprise Content Management System.

We think this project is a showcase of getting all aspects of the formula right... Along with forging a great working relationship with the client was an understanding that a great site combines all aspects of design, architecture, content, and technology.

The result is a site, management systems and hosting that exceeded requirements, and achieved launch date within a fixed budget - and a minimum of issues or headaches for either the client or the developer.

Holiday Hours & Support

After another record year of innovation, Eye Media offices will be closed from 23 December 2009 to 13 January 2010.

Of course, Eye Media never really “closes” and our online Customer Console is available for urgent support requests.

Eye Media people who are on leave will respond to mobile phone messages and emails based on urgency.

Customer Console

The Eye Media Customer Console is the central area for our customers to work with us on support and projects, provide you with alerts and other valuable information.

It means that the entire history of an activity and project is in one place - no more trails of emails and documentation to wrestle with.

The Console joins with our face-to-face and phone contact to provide an enhanced working relationship between Eye Media and our customers.

Contact us with your name, organisation, phone and email if you need access to this system.
